MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON

It is a positive year full of prospects. We are united by the Zebra stripes, IDUBE, towards one direction to Ohlange High School.

Individually, we have come across memorable milestones along our journey through life. Although we set off in different paths after high school, the memories we share bind us together because they are a part of our personal stories.

I am humbled to serve as a chairperson of Ohlange High School Alumni Association for the coming two (2) years.

This is the year to engage with the school and fellow alumni. We need you in so many ways:

1. By donating towards school education, e.g., Study guides for grade 10 to 12, etc.

2. By donating towards school events such as Sports gear, gifts for the schoolhouse competitions, Matric Farewell, which is compulsory for the school and Prizes for the top 3 Matriculants.

3. By offering your services in Student monitoring programmes.

4. By uplifting our school by introducing culinary and knitting courses.

Ohlange High School is always open and in need of your contribution in realising our dream to revive and refine the school culture and education.

Doctor John Langalibalele Dube

Doctor John Langalibalele Dube, also known as Mafukuzela, because of his relentless hard work to build the school, was the son of Mr Kakonina James Dube. Kakonina’s mother was Mayembe, who was the wife of Chief Dube.

Ohlange High School is a High School in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was founded by John Dube and Nokutela Dube née Mdima. It was the first school in South Africa started by a black person. John Dube was also the first President of what became the ANC. The school was chosen by President Nelson Mandela as the place where he would cast his vote in the first racially inclusive election in South Africa in 1994.

In 1960, the government had planned to close the school, to convert it into a men’s hostel. The school had problems with the learners from the then Transvaal and Natal, fighting one another. By this time, the school was a boarding school, providing Arts, Carpentry, Academics, Music etc. It had been indeed an Industrial School, which DR JL Dube had dreamt of.
